Important and sundry top 10 lists

Diverse and miscellaneous top 10 lists have always interested all of us since childhood. Lists are means of organising our thoughts, of cataloguing our preferences and our dislikes and above all of sharing our classification with others. The most popular worldwide would of course be the top 10 movies of all times. Now this is where we begin a sub-sect of listing: is it the most popular top 10 films? Or is it the top 10 best films ever made? Each list is based on individual choices and groupings. For our own satisfaction we shall have a look at the top 10 movies of all times based on popularity, taking into account inflation when we calculate the monetary receipts.

Topping the list, of course, is Titanic, a blockbuster to beat all. Dark Knight, Avatar, Star Wars and Shrek 2 followed in the same order. Then, of course we have E.T., Star Wars – Episode 1, and Pirates of the Caribbean. The last two on the list are Spiderman and Transformers.

If we look at movies from a different perspective and sort them according to their quality and their finesse, then we have a slightly different list. Citizen Kane is believed by many to be the greatest film ever made, the others in this list are Shawshank Redemption, Schindler s List, To Kill a Mockingbird, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, Star Wars, Psycho, Godfather, Dark Knight and Brief Encounter. As we said earlier, lists tend to be subjective, the parameters on which they are chosen are different in each case and yield different results.

Let us move from movies to television, a natural progression. Which are the Top 10 American TV drama series of all times? Do we make a judgement based on their popularity or on the social message they conveyed? Or do we just make a list of the shows which we personally liked a lot – and hopefully so did the rest of the audience. Star Trek and NYPD Blue are undisputed leaders in this list, followed closely by The Fugitive and the Rockford Files. Sopranos, Six Feet Under and Deadwood are also a part of this list, as are Hill Street Blues and Homicide-Life on the Street. The last on this Top 10 list is The Twilight Zone.

There are a few odd Top 10 lists which are making the rounds of the internet. Some of them are funny, a few totally over the top and some do not even warrant a discussion. There are lists of the best movie lines ever, of the longest kiss in any film, of the worst movies ever made among others.

So, go ahead make your list, if no one else has made a similar list, you may start a trend. If someone else has made a list of the same classification, you can have a great time comparing the two, and of course you can add them to the annals of Top 10 Lists worldwide.
