Bintan is one among the Riau Islands of Indonesia. It has a rich and colorful history with many invasions and colonization attempts by Arabs and Europeans and internal feuds between the Malays and Bugis. Today Bintan Island has a fairly large manufacturing base. There is also some development of agro-business.

However, tourism is the mainstay of the island economy. It was decided to develop as a tourist destination and area was allotted by the government to be developed as a resort area. Today Bintan has an exclusive resort area at the northern end known as Lagoi. These resorts are high end luxury resorts aimed primarily at Singapore. They offer a great vacation destination, ideal for rest and rejuvenation of the senses and soul.

However, hotels accommodation is not restricted to trendy resorts. There are also many hotels based at the exceedingly popular and pretty Trikora beach at the eastern end of the island. So like the rest of Indonesia hotel accommodation, Bintan too has hotels aimed at the more mid level and budget travelers.

The main town is Tanjung Pinang. Here you can discover more of the history of the island and the culture of the local people. It is also a great place to get local handicrafts and other shopping at cheaper rates than on the rest of the island. On certain days, tourists can also catch cultural events of Malay music and dance.

Bintan s unspoiled beaches and the pristine beauty of its surroundings have made an increasingly popular destination especially amongst tourists from neighboring Singapore. Many of Singapore s residents use Bintan as a weekend getaway because of its proximity. Bintan is only a 45-minute ferry ride away from Singapore.

The resort area has its own little port to enable resort tourists to bypass the rest of Bintan. The resorts have provided a large range of activities to cater to the tastes of their guests. It is a popular golfing destination boasting of at least four world-class golf courses designed by prestigious course architects.

Like the rest of Indonesia, Bintan has a rich bountiful sea where marine life thrives and is therefore a great place to dive and snorkel. There are also many other water and adventure sports. Spa treatments are also a popular option with many people just choosing to relax with nature.
