2011 Mediterranean Holidays - Kefalonia

Article Written By: Osborne

Add Your Picture The Ionian Islands off mainland Greece are incredible vacation areas no one should miss. Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands at about 350 square miles. Much of the coastline is developed and modern, offering many amenities to tourists. Inland areas are still under development with many opportunities for growth and investment. Hundreds of thousands of visitors enjoy the islands each year.

The beaches are very popular for those travelers seeking relaxation, whereas other travelers enjoy touring the museums and churches of old. Nature reserves are also very popular, as the Koutavos Lagoon is a well-known feeding ground for loggerhead turtles and great for nature lovers.

Developed areas are very modern and well-traveled. Stone structures and many remains of decades past remind us of the incredible history of the area.

The history of the Greek Islands reaches back nearly 40,000 years according to archaeological findings. The discovery of the Mycenaean tholos tomb on the outskirts of Tzanata in 1991 was easily one of the most important archaeological discoveries of our time.

Culture: Rich in Greek culture, several books and movies have portrayed the Ionian Islands as mystical. Some of the most notable people who have hailed from Kefalonia are the King Odysseus of Ithaca, Captain Juan de Fuca, and art collector, writer and publisher, Christian Zervos. Fashion designer John Varvatos is of Kefalonian origin, as is gold medalist Sofia Bekatorou.

Recreation: Water sports, baseball, football, and cycling are leading sports enjoyed on the island. Cycling and hiking routes are plentiful and widely appreciated by travelers as well as the local population. The natural beauty offers something for everyone. Rolling hills, meadows, beaches, water and caves are very popular photo spots for tourists.

Transportation: Most of the roads are covered with asphalt and the Lixouri bypass is a four lane that bypasses the main area of Argostoli. Public transportation is very popular and a relatively inexpensive means of getting around for travelers and locals alike.

Argostoli is the island's capital and the most populated area with a population of around 9,000. The Municipality of Argostoli includes 5 settlements and 10 communities. The total population of the Argostoli Municipality is about 13,000.

Settlements include Spilia, Helmata, Kompothekrata, Lassi, and Minies. Each settlement has something unique to offer visitors. Spilia is well-known for Grecian style weddings and receptions. Beaches and private coves are the perfect getaway for newlyweds or anyone looking for a little privacy.

Communities include Agona, Davgata, Dilinata, Zola, Thinia, Kourouklata, Nifi, Troyiannata, Faraklata and Farsa. These somewhat small communities consist of about 400 to 800 people and make all holidaymakers feel welcome.

One of the most prevalent buildings is the Fanari Lighthouse, which was originally built in 1829 during the British occupation. The earthquake in 1953 destroyed the original building, but it was recently rebuilt from the original plans.

Several modern hotels and villas are available to visitors. Nearly every town, settlement and community offers a place for travelers to settle in for the night. Small bed and breakfasts are dotted along the countryside and larger hotels are available in the more populated areas. The area truly does offer something for everyone.
