The Greeks and the Phoenicians are said to be the first to set up a civilization in Spain. However, their area was soon occupied by the Romans who ruled over the place for more than six centuries until the Roman Empire declined and Visigoths took control. Rome had given for important social elements to Spain: the Roman law, the Latin language, the Christian religion and the municipality. Around 6th century, Visigoths took control of the entire Spanish Peninsula until Arabs conquered almost entire Spain around eighth century and brought Muslim religion along.

Traditions

Spanish siesta is an important custom. In Spain, siesta lasts for time between 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm. During this time, all business gets close down and people get indulged in a good lunch and a nap. Spain allows Spanish to refresh and revitalize themselves.

Languages

Because so many religions flourished in Spain, Spain has a cultural diversity and a number of languages are spoken here. The national language is Castilian which is similar to a Roman language but is commonly referred to as Spanish. The widely spoken language in Spain is Catalan which also has a Roman origin. Euskera is yet another language that is spoken by 600,000 Spanish people.

Sports

Bullfighting, bicycling and soccer are the favorite sports amongst people in Spain. Bullfighting is an old activity and is prevailing since 711AD. Spanish also enjoy golf, skiing and basket ball.

Food

Since Spain is surrounded by oceans on three sides, it is natural that Peninsula is greatly influenced with seafood. Along with seafood, Spanish cuisines is also influenced by number of civilizations that lived here including Rome, Greece, Celts, Jews and Muslims.

Spanish Tapas are famous and they're basically small sample that is served with traditional drinks. Spanish people like to have wine with their meals. In fact, Spain is a big producer of Wine. Traditional and famous drink of Spain is sangria.
