Explore The Flora And Fauna: Discover North India Wildlife

There are 88 National Parks, 490 Wildlife Sanctuaries and 15 Biosphere Reserves which together house 390 species of mammals, 455 of reptiles, over 200 amphibians, a thousand bird species and around 30,000 insect species.

Among the many mammals are also the threatened species of Asiatic Lions, Bengal Tigers and the white-rumped Vulture. North India, surrounded by the Himalayas from top and Aravali and Vindhyas in the south and west is richly endowed with flora and fauna. Some famous sanctuaries are Corbett National Park, Bharatpur bird sanctuary and Ranthambore tiger reserve.

Corbett, established on the foothills of the Himalayas in 1936, is most famous for its tigers but one can also find Asian Elephants, Himalayan Black Bear, Sloth Bear, Crocodiles and many other mammals in addition to a rich avian population. Best time to visit is November 15- June 15. The nearest airport is is Phoolbagh in Pantnagar. The park is easily accessible by rail and road too.

Bharatpur is a bird sanctuary and is considered an Ornithologists paradise. It is home to many domestic and migratory birds like Pelicans, Cranes, Ducks, Eagles, Hawks, Painted Storks, and the star attractions- the Siberian Cranes. Best time to spot the domestic birds is between August and November, and for migratory birds it is October to February. Nearest airport is at Agra.

Ranthambore, nestled between the Aravali and Vindhya ranges in Rajasthan, is another tiger reserve, but houses several other species of animals too, in addition to a rich flora. Another attraction here is the 10th century Ranthambore fort which is the oldest fort in Rajasthan. Visitors can choose from three different safaris- by jeep, elephant or boat. Best time to visit is October to March, and it is closed during the monsoons. Nearest airport is Jaipur and railway station is Sawai Madhopur.

Apart from these, there are several other National Parks and sanctuaries like Kanha in Madhya Pradesh, Pench tiger reserve on the MP-Maharashtra border, Bandhavgarh in MP and Sariska in Rajasthan. As has been mentioned, the best time to visit these places is between autumn and spring. All parks have appropriate boarding and lodging facilities and offer different packages to suit every budget.

Visiting a wildlife reserve is an ideal way to spend a vacation. What can be a bigger stress-buster than spending a few days in the lap of nature and observing the scenic beauty and enchanting wildlife! The flora and fauna in India is among the richest in the world and a must visit for every tourist.
