Holidays are a time when people come together to celebrate. Not only are they celebrating the passing of a particular holiday such as Christmas or Thanksgiving, but they also celebrate themselves as a family. Family holidays are a wonderful excuse to round up the whole family for some good quality time, and to make wonderful memories for the future. It is also a time to start new traditions which your children can then take with them once they have children of their own.

A great holiday to start new traditions for is July 4th. Younger children may not understand the significance of that day in 1776 when America’s founding fathers declared independence from Britain by signing their names to the Declaration of Independence. For younger children, they will remember the flashing of the fireworks in the hot, night sky. They will remember the cold soda and the warm potato salad and the parade with the fire trucks blaring sirens and flashing lights, along with firemen tossing candy to the children waiting on the side of the road! As we get older, we appreciate more and more the value of family holidays. As an adult, it is not only about creating memories and maintaining tradition; it is also about incorporating some old morals into new family members.

While attending public holiday celebrations, such the July 4th Fireworks display, it is important that you hold on tight to your children, and what is equally as important is that you pre-arrange a meeting place should you get separated (which is inevitable with so many people in one place). It is a good idea to point out to children where police officers are so they can easily find one should they need help. The crowds are so thick that if you lose your hold on your child, even for split second, they will be swallowed by the pulsing masses of people trying to push through to the trains or to see the fireworks. Once you have established your safety routine, you can then make your way the beautiful fireworks display safe in the knowledge that should the worst happen, everybody knows what to do. Also, be sure to bring along a blanket to sit on, and possibly a light jacket should it rain. While the heat of the American summer can be sweltering during the day, the breeze at night can become very cool. It may also be a good idea to bring a cooler full of beverages to help maintain hydration, which will keep the kids from complaining that they are thirsty. The 4th July celebrations are beautifully breathtaking and overwhelming all at once – combining live music with fireworks. After the fireworks have finished, be warned, there will be a huge rush to get back to the trains to go back to the suburbs. Should you have smaller children with you, it may be a good idea to wait a little until the crowds to thin out.

Once you arrive at the station, expect to be overwhelmed by the queues for the trains, however, once on board you can sit back and reflect on the wonderful memories you have just created on your family holiday at this year’s Independence Day. All this goes to show that self catering holidays can be fulfilling if planned correctly.
