Montgomery, Alabama is the capital of that state. For a brief time it was capital of the Confederacy, and the Confederate president, Jefferson Davis, was inaugurated there in 1861. It also has historical significance for the civil rights movement in the South. Rosa Parks, who died recently aged 92, was a Montgomery resident, and was arrested in Montgomery for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger. This action triggered the Montgomery Bus Boycott, one of the earliest civil disobedience campaigns. This article describes some of the attractions of modern day Montgomery for visitors. Tours for schools and groups are available.Another feature of interest in downtown Montgomery is the Hank Williams museum. Hank Williams, who died in 1953, was one of America's greatest ever country music stars. He lived in Montgomery from childhood till his death at the age of just 29. Hank had 11 number one hits, and he got his first break at the WSFA radio station in Montgomery. The museum contains an extensive collection of memorabilia, including the baby blue Cadillac in which he died in early 1953.Visitors to town today who seek Montgomery Alabama hotels may like to stay at the Staybridge Suites Hotel, which is on Eastchase Parkway. This is just off I-85 in the upscale Eastchase district, where there are many good restaurants and shops.The Staybridge Suites is Montgomery's newest all-suites hotel. It is a short distance from downtown Montgomery, and near to the new Eastchase open air shopping mall.
