Planning for your holiday, especially with the family in tow, can be a lot of work. To make things simpler, weandrsquo;ve compiled a list of tips for you to follow before you jet off to ensure that your holiday goes as smoothly as possible. Once you have the planning out of the way, you can sit back, relax and look forward to your trip.

Organise your documents - the most important travel document that you will need to sort out is your passport. Make sure that this is up to date, and check if you need any further passport documentation to travel to your destination - a visa may be required for example. Getting a new passport or visa sorted out can take time, so make sure that you arrange all of this at least 1 month before your trip.

Arrange your travel insurance - travel insurance is a must. If your flights are cancelled, or you have to cancel your trip for a valid reason, then the chances are that you will not be entitled to any kind of refund unless you have travel insurance in place. The cheapest insurance deals can be found online, but remember that cheapest does not always mean best! Read the fine print and make sure that you understand exactly what each policy covers.

Vaccinations and medical - depending on your destination, you may require vaccinations or medicine to take with you on your trip. Usually these will relate to Malaria, Hepatitis and Typhoid, so itandrsquo;s important to check whether this is required before you travel, and to pack enough medicine to last for your entire trip, with some extra just in case any of your medicines get lost en route.

Travel to the airport - you will not be going anywhere if you miss that flight! That is why it is best to make travel arrangements for getting to the airport well in advance of your trip. Whether you take the train, car, taxi or bus, make sure that you book an early ticket, giving you plenty of time to catch your flight, taking into account possible delays en route. And if you are travelling on a budget,

Packing your bags - what you need to pack will depend upon where you are holidaying, and what activities you hope to get up to while you are there. But there are always essentials to pack for every trip - underwear, tshirts, adaptor plugs if needed, your passport and travel documents, your travellers cheques and spending money, toiletries, and that all important toothbrush! Making up a packing list a couple of weeks before you go is the best way to make sure that you do not forget anything.

Book a house sitter - while you are away, and particularly if your house is going to be left empty, you want to keep your home as safe as possible. Why not try and arrange for a friend or relative to pop round each day, water the plants, collect together the mail and open and close curtains as need be.

Do some holiday research - a great idea to make sure that you get the best out of your holiday is to do some research into the area that you are visiting before you go. The internet is a fantastic holiday research tool where you will be able to find transport details, information about sites of interest that you may want to visit, as well as the best places to eat and drink while you are there.
