Animal lovers who have their own pets should be a necessity, and you want staff that are kind and have a good demeanour. Don't be afraid to go in and see what they are like, and make sure you'd be happy with them looking after your cat or dog.

They should also have a vet on site, or at least one close by that is on call 24 hours a day. Health issues can arise from time to time so it's paramound that a veterinarian is nearby to address any problems.

Food - Cats are renowned for being fussy eaters and the last thing you want is for them to stop eating while you're on holidays because they don't like the food on offer. Find a pet resort that has a wide variety of fresh food, and also dry food. Selections at the cat hotel may include brands such as Dine, Whiskas and Advanced. Don't be afraid to take in your own foods but be sure to check with the place first.

Suites - Animals don't like to be contained and are naturally exploratory creatures. So a large sized suite is important to keep your pet happy. They should be spacious and have plenty of features such as a climbing shelf, bed built in, scratch poles and fun toys to kep them entertained.

The suite should not have any communal areas as many cats can get territorial and will get worked up when they smell the scent of other animals. You should also look to bring a toy or blanket from home, which your animal is familiar with. This, along with his own smell will help him relax.

Exercise - Both cats and dogs like to be active so you want to make sure they will get plenty of exercise. For dogs, enquire about how often they will be walked, and what other activities the staff will give them. For cats, see how often they will be taken outide of their suite and how much attention they can expect to receive each day. Good pet resorts will ensure regular interaction with all their animals.

Most importantly, go with your gut. If you get a good feeling about a certain place, chances are you will be right.
