With Easter falling late this year, more families are looking to get away during the February Half Term. Some schools break up for a week on Friday 11th February, whilst others don't finish until the 18th. Either way, this is the perfect time to escape dreary British weather and head for a family holiday without having to wait until late April.

Family winter sun holidays are always popular at the first half term break of the year. The Canary Islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Palama offer a winning formula of mild temperatures, broad beaches and family entertainment. Resorts like Puerto Rico on Gran Canaria and Corralejo on Fuerteventura offer plenty of self-catering apartments for families who want to have the freedom to eat out in the wide choice of child-friendly restaurants.

On Lanzarote, Playa del Carmen is the most popular and busiest resort, while those seeking a more relaxed family atmosphere head to Costa Teguise or Playa Blanca. Tenerife's flagship resort Playa de las Americas might have a reputation for being a wild party destination in the summer months, but in the winter it is much more sedate, with plenty of amenities on offer for families.

All islands have a wonderful selection of seafront, upmarket properties offering the perfect space for parents to relax and unwind while their children are entertained in kids clubs. The brilliant value all-inclusive concept is growing in the Canary Islands too, with many new hotels now offering the option for families to have the cost of food , drink and entertainment included in their holiday.

One relative newcomer to the family winter sun scene is Egypt. Holidays to the Red Sea Coast have quickly taken off in popularity and it's easy to see why: with direct flights from many UK regional departure airports taking around five hours, clear seas teeming with tropical fish and a warm desert climate, it's perfect for a dose of February sunshine.

All-inclusive resort-style hotels are extremely popular in this part of the world and offer great value for money. Children are well catered for, with many properties offering kids clubs, separate pools and even on-site water parks to keep them entertained.

Of course, family holidays don't just have to be all beaches and buckets and spades: Going on a family ski holiday can be an exciting and unforgettable experience for children and adults alike. Children can go to ski school and learn the sport themselves, or their parents can take advantage of one of many childcare options. Some kids clubs offer snowman building, snow treasure hunts and cable car rides and many operators are even able to arrange private nannies. February is the perfect month to take to the slopes in ever popular countries like France, Austria and Italy, as well as up and coming destinations like Slovenia.

If you're looking for a budget holiday, it might be worth considering mainland Spain. Although you won't be guaranteed dry, hot weather here, it will certainly be better than the UK. Benidorm on the Costa Blanca might be rowdy in high summer, but out of season, it's altogether different, offering spotless beaches with boardwalks that are perfect for buggies, a brilliant sea life park and zoo and plenty of places to eat out.
