A quick guide to Paignton holidays

The seaside town of Paignton plays an important part in the life of the English Riviera and is regarded as one of the most popular resorts along the southern coast of Devon. It has a long and varied history stretching back to Celtic times, but really became noted as a resort when the railway finally reached it in the 1800andrsquo;s. Today, Paignton is as popular as ever with visitors from all over the world and is the perfect location for a fun-filled, family holiday.

Paignton lies on the sheltered Torbay region of the county and is known for its clean, sandy beaches, warm water and traditional andlsquo;seasideandrsquo; town feel. Paignton holidays capture all the fun of a family break, with plenty to see and do around the town combined with excellent accommodation and a friendly welcome. Paignton has a wide selection of hotels from two to four stars, all with panoramic views of the sea. If youandrsquo;re looking for self-catering accommodation in Paignton then thereandrsquo;s plenty on offer as well, with fishermanandrsquo;s cottages along the bay or farmhouse locations slightly further out of town. The town is very much geared towards family holidays, offering plenty of facilities and entertainment to keep the little ones happy.

During the summer, Paignton plays host to a number of festivals including music and dance, comedy and crafts. Agatha Christie was a resident of Torbay and her legacy lives on in celebrations and events in commemoration of this extraordinary writer. For the more athletic thereandrsquo;s the Half-Marathon or if youandrsquo;re interested in wildlife, Paignton offers plenty of opportunity to go on guided tours of the seashore, giving young and old a chance to engage in one of the most traditional of seaside pastimes andndash; rockpooling.

For a touch of nostalgia, the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway is a must-visit on any itinerary. This beautifully restored line takes visitors on a journey along the bay, through some of the most beautiful countryside in Devon and terminates at Kingswear in the wonderfully wooded Dart Valley. From Kingswear you can take a ferry trip across to the historic town of Dartmouth, or cruise up the river Dart and take an open-topped bus trip back to Paignton for the perfect day out in Devon.

Paignton Zoo has a worldwide reputation as a centre of excellence in conservation and the promotion of wildlife protection. This multi-award winning centre is particularly known for its partnership with The Living Coast exhibition in Torquay, and combination tickets can be bought for both attractions, giving you and your family the chance to experience two exciting days out on just one ticket.

If you prefer a more relaxed holiday, Paignton has plenty of stately homes and country parks that are perfect for a gentle walk through manicured gardens. Many of the homes hold festivals of classical music or traditional crafts throughout the summer, combining high culture and a magnificent setting.

For watersports enthusiasts, the Torbay area has plenty of opportunities to engage in fishing, sailing and even scuba diving. The horseshoe shaped bay means that the waters are calm and clear and the sandy beaches are the perfect spot for a paddle for the less adventurous!

Paignton is everything a family seaside holiday should be, and with the 2009 season looking buoyant for Southwest tourism, booking early is advisable.
