Why you should spend your next holiday in Spain

Spain has long been a favourite destination for Brits looking for a little fun in the sun. More than 12 million of us holiday in the country every year? and here's why you should become one of their number.

Great weather: If there's one reason why you should visit Spain this year, it's the country's fabulous weather. With many areas enjoying more than 300 days of sunshine every year, this is the perfect location for anybody looking to escape from the gloomy British winter. Down in the south you'll see locals in shorts and shirt sleeves all year round, as daytime temperatures rarely drop below 17 degrees centigrade even in January.

Proximity to the UK: It might be a little too far to travel by train, but if you fly then Spain is only a couple of hours away. This ease of access combined with the excellent airport infrastructure means that it's possible to pop across to the Costas just for a few days when you really need a blast of sun.

Cheap flights: It isn't just the ease of access that makes short trips to Spain possible. The country is also served by a number of budget airlines, meaning that flying there is cheap as well. With inexpensive flights to the Costa del Sol, the Costa Blanca and the Canary Islands, as well as plenty of more obscure Spanish locations, you won't have to spend a fortune to have a little fun in the sun.

Europe's best beaches: Forget seeking out more obscure locations ? Spain has a beach to suit every tastes. With fine sand, blue skies, lapping waves and fantastic facilities, there really is no denying that the country has some of the best beaches within easy reach of the UK.

Stunning scenery: If you thought that Spain was all about seaside resorts and sandy beaches, then think again. In fact, the country has plenty to offer nature lovers, too. Venture off the beaten track in Andalucia or the Asturias and you'll find wilderness that will take your breath away. But watch out for wild horses and brown bears!

Leisure opportunities: There's plenty of fun to be had under the Spanish sun. Golfers will appreciate a wealth of top-class courses, while mountain bikers, hikers, horse-riders and water sports enthusiasts will also find much to entertain them.

It's certainly a mistake to dismiss Spain simply as an affordable package destination. The country has its fair share of party spots, but there are also hundreds of beautiful ancient towns, a wealth of incredible scenery and plenty of leisure opportunities. So, there really is no excuse not to spend your next holiday soaking up the Spanish sun.
