New York is a city that many people who go to America like to visit, and with excellent reason. It s an opportunity for any visitor to experience that city feeling. Situated on the north east of the United States of America, it has a very natural harbour that looks out over the Atlantic ocean, and the Statue of Liberty, one of America s most famous icons, stands here looking out over the ocean in a welcoming way.As most visitors don t arrive here by sea any more, a ferry across the harbour is a good way to take a better look at the Statue of Liberty. The Staten Island ferries makes a 1 hour round trip between lower Manhattan and Staten island, they run seven days a week, and are free to travel on. They re frequent too, departing every 20 minutes or so during peak travel times.The city of New York consists of five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island, and has a population of approximately 8.4 billion people. Big is something America and in particular New York does well, and the Manhattan skyline is a good example of this, as are the Empire State Building, and Central Park. The Empire State building is 102 storeys high, and has a view at the top which definitely has the wow factor. It may not be the worlds tallest building any more, but it s still pretty tall, and from the observatory floor which is open daily, you can see a good 80 miles on a clear day. Another building worth seeing is the Chrysler building which was built in 1930 and briefly held the title of world s tallest skyscraper until the Empire State building was finished a few months later. For shopping, 5th Avenue is the place to be. Many of the best and most well known shops can be found here including Tiffany s jewellery store whose fame is recognised world wide. Another place to go for shopping is Times Square, which is impressive with it s giant screens full of messages and advertisements, street vendors, and popular shops. If you get the chance to come here in the evening, stop somewhere for a meal and then stop out again into the night with all the bright lights lit up, it s well worth it. Bus tours are very popular, as there is plenty to see, and there are a lot of different sorts. You can go on trips to see the homes of the rich and famous, or ones where they take you round to see some of the key attractions of New York, but you can also take tours that will show you where famous TV shows and Movies were filmed too.There are many museums to choose from, from the Guggenheim museum of modern and contemporary art, to the Met and the Bronx museum of arts. There s the Jewish Museum, and Ellis Island Museum telling the tale of the 17 million immigrants who arrived here via Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954. There s even a museum of American folk art too.
