Touring Dubai's History

Though Dubai features all the hallmarks of these modern times, like glittering lights, skyscrapers that reach out into forever, the hum of running motors and cemented sidewalks that almost never end, it also offers tourists a somewhat rarer treat: the opportunity to travel through history. First, eager travelers should explore the Dubai of old by visiting the district of Bastakiya. This little district features tall, sturdy wind-towers that still cool a large array of Dubais courtyard houses today as they did before the advent of electricity, little lanes that lead to a bustling marketplace where people still peddle their art and foods and other crafts, and distinctly Arabian architecture.

Secondly, take a stroll past Burj Nahar. Once this grand tower was used by guardians of Dubai to protect from dangerous invaders and other threats, but now this photograph-friendly watch tower is surrounded by the gardens of Deira; recently renovated and absolutely picturesque, this tower is a piece of history and a must see for any tourist.

Next, turn towards the Dubai Museum, which happens to be located in the historic Al Fahidi Fort. The Fort dates back to the late 1700s and, like Burj Nahar, once served as a guarding post, this time for any land excursions heading into Dubai. Now that its been refashioned as a museum, the Al Fahidi Fort features elaborate exhibits that give visitors a taste of life before modernity, providing glimpses into how the people of Dubai used to eat, pray, and do business with one another.

It is also possible to visit the residences of Dubais past leaders. For example, the official home of Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum, who ruled Dubai during the first half of the 20th century, houses old pictures, money, and other pieces of history and is located in the Al Shindagha area; conveniently nearby, the two-story, mud-and-stone home of Sheikh Obaid is also a renovated museum open to guests.

For the curious and archeologically inclined tourists who want to explore Dubais history even deeper, it is possible to visit several excavation sites. This requires a bit more effort and resolve for tourists, so plan ahead; some of these sites, like the one located in Jumeirah, require that a special permit be obtained beforehand. Still, the extra effort pays off, as it holds treasures from as far back as the 7th century.

Though it is not possible to actually travel back through time, visiting the historic sites in Dubai gives tourists a taste of life before the modern wonders set in. Sure, the glitter and fuss of the modern world hold a charm and a fascination all their own ? and provide plenty of worthy places to visit, too ? nevertheless, for those who want to escape the present and sink into a world of unfamiliar but intricate detail, the historic sites of Dubai are a perfect place to visit.
