Toronto: A Diverse City of Arts and Heritage
Toronto is an exciting tourist destination offering hospitality to travelers from all over the world. Reportedly as culturally diverse as any other metropolitan area in North America, it features established ethnic neighbourhoods of nearly every background. Visitors to Toronto acknowledge it as a sports town second to none, a world-class performance centre for the arts and a surprisingly clean city made up of multicultural neighbourhoods offering authentic hospitality in many styles.
The vibrant Greek neighborhood of The Danforth celebrates its culinary delights annually in early August, closing the street for a few days for their ?Taste of The Danforth? event. Fabulous dishes are available year-round from the authentic Greek dining establishments in the area.
Around the third week of August, the Canadian National Exhibition opens and runs through the first week of September. Here, many different foods are available in the Food Building and the Foods of The World area. Visitors to the CNE also arrange for concert tickets for their favorite international musical acts performing at the CNE Grandstand.
Not far from the Rogers Centre, the Toronto Maple Leafs battle their NHL rivals at the Air Canada Centre, sharing that venue with the NBAs Toronto Raptors. European visitors may be especially interested in catching the North American spin on Major League Soccer at a Toronto FC game just down the road at BMO Field.
Many live theatre fans coordinate their trips to Toronto with specific shows at the citys Princess of Wales Theatre, the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre, The Royal Alexandria Theatre or any of the fine productions in the various secondary venues that support Toronto as one of North Americas major theatre centres.
Visiting opera fans will be pleased to know that the Canadian Opera Company is the sixth largest producer of opera in North America, and stages its presentations in a purpose built theatre for opera and ballet with the finest acoustics, the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.
A relatively recent development favoring Toronto tourism is the Distillery District, centered by the Gooderham and Worts Distillery which was at one time the largest in the British Empire. Its been featured in many films, including X-Men, Cinderella Man and Chicago. Lately the areas been compared to Soho in the 60s, with its dedication to promoting arts, culture and entertainment. Gooderham and Worts serves as a charming setting for some of Torontos most progressive restaurants, cafes, galleries and theatre companies. Scheduled activities extend most of the year from January to October, ranging from a celebration of Robbie Burns Day to Caribbean Week.
Many tourists come to Toronto to see world-class sporting events. In the summer, the Toronto Blue Jays take to the field in Rogers Centre, sharing it later in the year with the Canadian Football Leagues Toronto Argonauts. An impressive visual background to these games is evident when the domes roof is open, revealing the CN Tower. The NFLs Buffalo Bills also have a schedule of a few games to be played in Toronto in 2008 - 2012.
