Things to Do in Spain in Winter

Article Written By: JD Sullivan

Add Your Picture Many people are curious about what Spain is like in winter. Famously known as a summer hot spot for beaches, restaurants, eating paella and sipping sangria, Spain is, well, pretty hot in winter too. Its been said that "if you're stuck between which months to go and visit Spain and it comes down to August or December, You guessed it, December is the winner." There are a couple of reasons why Spain can be better in the winter than in summer-the weather and the different activities. Here area few things to do during winter in Spain:

- You can go skiing. Spain has the more mountains than any country in Europe. And yes, it snows in Spain.

- During the summer, many businesses are closed. The heat gets to everyone so they run to cooler shores. Especially in Madrid and Seville. During this time many of the best places are closed because no one is there to manage them. In winter most places are open for business, there's more art exhibitions and special events. Besides water and beach activities you can find just as much to do during wintertime.

- The winters in Spain are subject to the wonderful Christmas and New Year spirit spreading throughout the land. For Example:

November 27th - December 2nd is the International Festival of Documentary and Short Film in Bilbao, Basque Country.

December 8th - December 13th is when Christmas begins. El Dia de Santa Lucia, the beneficing saint of the blind sings Christmas carols along the streets. Most famous in Las Palmas.

December 22nd is El Gordo the colossal Spanish lottery, is drawn during this time. The lottery is so massive tickets start selling in August.

December 31st Spain host a well known Christmas Market, the Santa Llucia which is held in Barcelona.

January festivities in Palma de Mallorca is the month of Sant Sebastia a saint whose service in Spain has its beginnings because of his defense against the plague for the historic agricultural society in the Balearic Islands. Cheap flights to Palma are available year round.

January 16th is the Revetlla de Sant Antoni night. Or simply put Saint Anthony's Eve. On this night the inhabitants of Palma light bonfires and arrange barbecues called "torrades." The fire is a sign of cleansing and the rebirth of life, as well as victory of good over evil.

Barcelona is a winter wonderland. You can visit old vineyards at Vilafranca del Penedes and the forest and volcanic region at the Garrotxa. There's also a daytrip to Nuria which has stunning winter scenery.

Depending on the region you are in, Spain can have cold or slightly warm winter weather. Either way, you'll find plenty to do in this historical, stunning country.
