Kingston Ontario Tourist Operators Welcome 2010 Skate Canada International

When Canada made the official announcement last month that they had selected Kingston, Ontario to host the 2010 Skate Canada International, particularly those in the tourist sector, including restaurants, inns and accommodation providers, were thrilled. The four day event, which will be held from October 28-31, 2010 at Kingston's new K-Rock Centre, will bring widespread media attention to Kingston, as well as attract thousands of people to the area including, organizers, participants and skating fans.

"Hosting an event of this calibre is wonderful for the city of Kingston and for Kingston area tourist operators," states Anne Boyd. "Skate Canada's timing couldn't be better. With the busy summer season long gone and the fall colour tours nearly over, the event, which is slated for the end of October, is being held at a time of year that is usually quiet for inns. Not only do events like Skate Canada International attract business to the city during the event itself, but the national and international media attention that this event will receive is a tremendous opportunity for Kingston to show itself off, attracting future tourists to this fabulous city. The city of Kingston has a lot to offer visitors. It is a great Ontario tourist destination," says Boyd.

Skate Canada International is the second competition of six events in the annual ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series that also includes Skate America, Cup of China, France's Trophee Eric Bompard, Russia's Rostelecom Cup and Japan's NHK Trophy.

Skaters accumulate points awarded throughout the series. As well as competing, it gives skaters the opportunity to test out new routines. The six top placing men, women, pair and ice dance teams qualify to compete in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in Beijing, China in December.

Dedicated to providing Canadians with the opportunity to participate in skating throughout their lifetime for fun, fitness, and achievement, it is the official organizer and the largest figure skating governing body in the world and the organization is dedicated to the development of personal excellence through participation in skating.

Although the event is several months away and the list of competitors won't be announced until June's ISU Grand Prix Commission meeting, tickets to Skate Canada International are already on sale and can be purchased online. Jeff Garrah, CEO of the Kingston Economic Development Corporation (KEDCO) is confident that Skate Canada Kingston will be a great success for everyone involved and that the event is a tremendous achievement for sport tourism in Kingston.

He anticipates that the competition will attract a minimum of 3,000 additional visitors to the area and have an economic impact of $5 million or more for the city. One of Canada's oldest and most historic cities, Kingston already enjoys the benefits of a growing tourist industry.

"Skate Canada International has certainly created a lot of excitement within the community. People are talking, especially about the possibility that Canadian Olympic medalists Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue will be taking part and performing here. I'm personally looking forward to this event. It will be great for business and great for the city of Kingston," says innkeeper Anne Boyd.
