Iceland has always been a very intriguing country, but one that has stuck fear into the hearts of the bargain holidaymakers. Notoriously expensive, it has been just out of reach for a long time now. Due to it s pristine environment and strict regulations relating to meat production, Icelandic meat is second to none. Lambs roam freely in the mountains and are considered one of the most succulent meat available. Iceland also has a wide range of cheese and the most superb fish, caught in the unpolluted North Atlantic waters.

Traditional fare includes a varied array of preserved food, such as smoked and salted lamb, dried fish, pickled salmon and cured shark. Served alongside deep fried, paper thin bread called laufabrauo and rye pancakes. In restaurants VAT and service are always included therefore tipping is not common practice.

Along with its crisp air and incredible cleanliness, Iceland also has a very low crime rate. There is no need to fear the people there. If there is anything to be wary of, it s the weather. Conditions can deteriorate exceptionally quickly and can be ferocious.

Travelers should never attempt lone ventures into un-chartered territory unless experienced and even then, caution is advised. However, this should not deter you from visiting this wondrous country, stick to the straight and narrow and you ll be enchanted by Iceland and it s wide-ranging experiences.

Flying from London to Reykjavik takes an average time of 2.5 hours and with cheap flights available from many UK airports, 2010 is the year to give Iceland a try.
