Beijing is one of the world's greatest cities. It is a metropolis in northern China and the capital of the People's Republic of China. It is governed as a municipality under direct administration of the central government. It is China's second largest city after Shanghai, with more than 17 million people in the area of jurisdiction. The Yangtze river, or Chang Jiang is the longest river in China and Asia, and the third-longest in the world, after the Nile in Africa and the Amazon. As the largest river in the region, the Yangtze is historically, culturally, and economically important to China. It is about 6300 km long and flows from its source in Qinghai Province, eastwards into the East China Sea at Shanghai. It acts as a line of geographical division between North and South.
