Boston Massachusetts The cultural side

With its location on the north eastern sea board, Boston was one of the original English Puritan settlements in North America and was founded as early as 1630. Consequently, in terms of United States history, Boston boasts a great number of sights and attractions and has a significant connection to the development of modern America - and has become a notable tourist destination because of this. Yet, with cheap flights to America increasing in number from Europe the number of visitors is set to grow again in 2010.

So what does Boston Massachusetts have to offer in terms of culture? Boston's rich cultural heritage stems from the diversity of ethnic groups that meet there including White and African Americans, as well as Irish, Italian and West Indian in an area which prides itself on its education - perhaps best exemplified by its universities, such as Boston University, Northeastern University and the University of Massachusetts Boston.

The city's academic importance makes itself known via its many museums - many of which are affiliated directly with certain colleges and other institutions. The Museum of Fine Arts on Huntington Avenue is one of the largest and most popular museums in the US and houses nearly half a million artworks, spanning from contemporary and textile pieces to pieces from Asia, Africa and Europe. The neoclassical sandy-coloured building of the Boston Athenaeum is also testament to the city's learnedness - and one of the oldest independent libraries in the country.

Boston is also home to a significant theatre district which includes the Boston Opera House and the Cutler Majestic Theatre, the former is home to the acclaimed annual Boston Ballet production of The Nutcracker, while the latter is known for performing arts and Opera Boston. Boston also has a thriving music scene fusing indie and college rock, ska punk and Hip-Hop.

The diversity and variety of Boston culture is perhaps best experienced through its cuisine. Due to its seaside location the area is particularly well-known for seafood such as clam chowder (made with clams, potato, cream, onion and bacon), steamed or fried clams, cod and chips, and lobster. Additionally, the city also boasts many ethnic style eateries ranging from Chinese and Thai, to Vietnamese, Japanese and Korean restaurants. Faneuil Hall is a Boston Attraction and a major destination for foodies.
