Florence Italy (or Firenze) is one of the most architecturally stunning cities in the world, and the birthplace the Renaissance, which ushered in a set of intellectual and social development standards still in evidence in Western civilization today. This famous cathedral is only one of the innumerable examples of Italian architecture found around the city. Another example is not actually a building at all, it's a bridge. The Ponte Vecchio (old bridge) which spans the Arno River, includes many shops under its roof. Michelangelo's famous statue David - or rather a replica of it - stands in front of the Palazzo Vecchio.

Works of Donatello and Giambologna can be found around the city, and the famous Uffizi gallery houses works created Cimabue, Botticelli, Donatello, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Raphael.

Another of the more museums is the Galleria dell'Accademia, which holds a significant Michelangelo collection, and there is also the Pitti Palace, which holds an expansive collection from various artists. Also, there is the famous Palatine Gallery, which contains more than 500 works Renaissance paintings once owned by the Medicis.

Educational institutes are also an important part of the city's history, none more so than the Institute and Museum of the History of Science. Florence was at the front lines of the battle between science and religion that denoted the Renaissance; this museum holds artifacts and documents covering science's side of that famous debate.

And, there is the Silver Museum. As the name suggests it holds a large and virtually priceless collection of silverworks, as well as gemstones. Finally, there is also a Porcelain museum, which is home to porcelain works from all over Europe.
