Rwanda is a gorgeous vacation spot that a lot of people overlook. While it is not the typical lounge on the beach type of trip, there is still a great deal of activities and magnificent sites to see. With that said, here are five things you must see and do in Rwanda.

1. Kigali is the capital city of Rwanda and there is no better place to start than here. It will allow you to truly take in everything this area has to offer and what kind of history has taken place. Although devastating, making a trip to the Genocide Museum, which documents the 100-day massacre in 1994, is a must. It truly is unlike anything you will ever see or experience.

2. Rwanda has some fantastic wildlife that anyone and everyone will enjoy. The A'Kagera National Park spans over 1,000 square miles of savannah and consists of a wide array of wildlife. In this national park you will see over 500 species of birds alone, which is truly remarkable. Sites like Hakuna Matata Tours can even let you in on safaris and other adventures that can put you amidst lions, hippos, leopards, apes, elephants and giraffes.

The lake is in the Albertine Rift, a part of the Great Rift Valley. Lake Kivu empties into the Ruzizi River, which flows southwards into Lake Tanganyika. Beneath the lake lie vast reserves of approximately 55 billion cubic of dissolved methane gas which have not been exploited. Lake Kivu is a tourist center, safe to swim (but just ask locally to be completely sure). There are nice beaches, gorgeous landscapes and the sunsets are regularly stunning. There are some excellent places to stay on the Lakeside such as Kibuye and -especially-Gisenyi near the DR Congo border.

5. Not many people can say they have climbed a volcano in a lifetime, but this is precisely what you can do with Parc National des Volcans. This region features volcanic mountains including Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira. Just know that these are best trekked as oppose to climbing them.

Rwanda is full of adventures, activities and sites to see. From the mountains to lakes to incredible wildlife, it is a trip to plan to perfection.
