Depending on how old your children are, traveling by air can be quite challenging. To alleviate some of the chaos and stress, I suggest that you plan out your trip ahead of time. Small children may find being confined to their seats difficult to handle, especially if they are on a long flight and the change of cabin pressure during takeoff and landing can hurt their ears. On a side note, traveling by plane can be an exciting adventure for children. There are a few things that you can do ahead of time to ensure that your children are ready for air travel. I would have to say that probably the most important item on the list is to make sure that you take your children to the pediatrician for a medical check-up and ensure that their immunizations are up-to-date. The airlines require that children's vaccinations are current in order to fly the friendly skies. If you are scheduled for a longer flight, make every effort to reserve an overnight flight that will coincide with your children's sleeping habits. Even though you are traveling, you want to try and mimic the same routine you have at home as closely as possible with younger children. Many airlines have 'assistants' available for parents who are traveling alone with small children. The assistants take care of collecting baggage from the aircraft as well as from the baggage carousels.Your carry-on bags should hold the necessary items that your children may need during the flight. There are a wide variety of such items and a few suggestions that I have for you to pack are as follows: Make sure you have at least one extra change of clothes for each child, change mat for public areas, baby wipes, tissues, rash creams, bottles of milk, favorite snacks such as crackers and cereal, any medications that are needed on a daily basis, spill-proof drinks and toys and games. Many planes provide a cooler temperature on board, so I suggest that you dress your children in a few light layers; this way you can add layers if your child is cold or remove layers if your child is warm once you are onboard the plane. The last suggestion tip that I have for you is to ask for help if you need it. In other words, do not try and warm up your baby's formula bottle under hot water running in the sink in the bathroom. Ask a flight attendant to warm up the liquid in the bottle for your child; this way it is done properly!
