Cu Chi War History Museum One of the most tourist attractions in Saigon Vietnam
This museum is not actually at the tunnel sites, bul rather just off the main highway in the central area of the town of Cu Chi. Sad to say, the Cu Chi War History Museum (Nha Truyen Thong Huyen Cu Chi) is rather disappointing and gets few visitors. It's a small museum where almost all explanations are in Vietnamese.
The exhibits have a severe propaganda bias. There is a collection of gruesome photos showing severely wounded or dead civilians after being attacked by US bombs or burned with napalm.
A painting on the wall shows US soldiers armed with rifles being attacked by Vietnamese peasants armed only with slicks. A sign near the photos formerly read (in Vietnamese) 'American conquest and crimes', but this was changed in 1995 to read 'enemy conquest and crimes'. Apparently, some effort is being made to tone down the rhetoric in anticipation of receiving more US visitors.
One wall of the museum contains a long list of names, all VC guerrillas killed in the Cu Chi area. An adjacent room displays re¬cent photos of prosperous farms and factories, an effort to show the benefits of Vietnam's socialist revolution. There is also an odd collection of pottery and lacquerware with no explanations attached. In the lobby near the entrance is a statue of Ho Chi Minh with his right arm raised, waving hello. Admission costs US$1 for foreigners.
Cu Chi is a district which covers a large area, parts of which are as close as 30km to Ho Chi Minh City. The Cu Chi War History Museum is the closest place to the city, but the Ben Binh and Ben Duoc tunnels are about 50km and 70km from central Saigon by highway. There is a back road which cuts the drive time down, though it means driving on bumpy dirt roads.
Bus Buses from Ho Chi Minh City to Tay Ninh leave from the Tay Ninh Bus Station (Ben Xe Tay Ninh) in Tan Binh District and Mien Tay Bus Station in An Lac, All buses to Tay Ninh pass though Cu Chi town, but getting from the town of Cu Chi to the tunnels by public transport is difficult.
Car Hiring a car in Ho Chi Minh City and just driving out to Cu Chi is not all that expensive, especially if the cost is split by several people. A visit to the Cu Chi tunnel complex can easily be combined with a stop at the headquarters of the Caodai sect in Tay Ninh. A car for an all-day excursion lo both should cost about US$40.
