Attractions and Things to Do in Berkshire

Add Your Picture Berkshire is a lovely county in South East England, known for its beautiful gardens, wonderful historical sites and more recently for the lovely young lady who will soon become part of the Royal family, Kate Middleton, who grew up in the delightful village of Buckleberry.

There are many attractions to enjoy during a visit to Berkshire, ranging from the historic to the romantic. Some of the more popular destinations allow those who venture forth the opportunity to walk through fascinating historical sites, enjoy an exciting afternoon of horse racing or spend a tranquil afternoon strolling through some of the most beautiful gardens found anywhere.

One of the most beloved destinations in Berkshire is Windsor. Visitors will be captivated by experiencing English history with a walk through Windsor Castle which was built during the time of William the Conqueror 1000 years ago and is currently the residence of Her Majesty The Queen. Windsor Castle is a magnificent place and a visit will reward those who tour its expanse a chance to view some of the beautiful treasures contained within. It is best to check the current schedule for hours and activities as this is a working royal palace.

On the grounds of Windsor Castle is St. George's Chapel, a historic and beautiful religious college which was built over a fifty year period beginning in 1475 by Edward IV. St. George's is also the final resting place of ten of the royal monarchs of England. A truly magnificent place and a must see when visiting Windsor.

Situated on the River Thames, Windsor is also a lovely place for an afternoon stroll. Many a classic piece of literature has been inspired by this picturesque area. A true gem in Windsor is Savill Garden, a tranquil and lovely place to meander and relax, with 35 acres of meticulously tended flower beds and lush manicured lawns making it a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. Savill Garden is located within the Windsor Great Park.

A favourite for the entire family, Legoland Windsor is the place to let the child in all of us come out and play. Spanning 150 acres, Legoland is a colourful world of fun and adventure with rides, workshops and fun for the entire family. The park is themed on the ever popular toy of the same name and has entertained over 1.6 million guests per year since its opening in 1996.

Horse racing is said to be the sport of Kings and a short distance from Windsor Castle is the world famous Ascot Racecourse which offers horse racing at its finest. An exciting time is waiting for the entire family to enjoy with events including the Royal Ascot flat race and the Victor Chandler Chase jump race. There are also a variety of non-racing activities to be enjoyed including Beer and Wine Festivals and fireworks displays as well as entertainment for the children such as rides, face painting and jugglers.

Evening time offers some excellent entertainment options including The Theatre Royal Windsor, which has been host to many of the best musicals and plays in the United Kingdom since its opening in 1910. Located a stones throw from Windsor Castle, The Theatre Royal offers a wonderful selection of productions ranging from the classics to fine new works destined for the West End and abroad.
