Digital signals from your source

There are many ways to bring digital signals from your source to your display or hub destination. One of the best is the DVI cable. Almost all modern PCs, DVD players and HTPCs from all manufacturers include some form of DVI output from the motherboard. The question is why should you use DVI cables over some other forms of digital video signal transport? We will answer that question but first we will discuss what DVI is and what DVI isn't and also touch on some of the alternatives on offer.

DVI stands for Digital Video Interface. This is a way of describing DVI by what it does. DVI is an interface standard. A cable can be DVI-compatible or not compatible with DVI. We would call the compatible cable, a dvi-cable. Now we can talk about what DVI is not. DVI is not a proprietary format; this means that anyone can make a DVI cable or port as long as it complies with the DVI standard. DVI is also platform agnostic, this means that any DVI source must be compatible with any DVI output.

This seems obvious, but things will get more complex, so we will need a base of knowledge to build on to understand the advanced concepts to come. Since DVI is digital, it provides an excellent quality signal with no degradation within its normal operating parameters. DVI will not be interfered with by magnetic fields, radio waves, or other forms of electromagnetic disturbances. In this way, DVI is superior to the standard VGA cable, which can be susceptible to these forms of interference. DVI compares favourably to many of the other digital delivery forms on offer.

Comparing DVI to HDMI for instance, reveals that while HDMI is security bit locked to reduce compatibility, DVI suffers no such degradation. DVI carries fully uncompressed digital video at levels that can satisfy any modern consumer display in all resolutions. HDMI is actually a reduced feature subset of DVI with many of DVIs features disabled. If you want the best visual experience, DVI is superior to HDMI in virtually all its forms. Now that we have talked about what DVI is, and seen some of its competition it is easy to see why a DVI cable should be at the top of your list when considering how to bring digital video signals to a display.

It is superior to D-SUB VGA due to it not being analog and it is superior to HDMI because it does not sacrifice features and performance. The DVI family is continuing to be expanded with the new releases of mini and micro DVI. Any digital video solution would be well served by using DVI as there transport medium.
