Selecting the Right Amount of Shaft Flex for Your Needs

Article Written By: taamiv

In golf, the flex is generally categorized in five categories: stiff, extra stiff, regular, senior, and ladies. It is important for a golfer to choose the flex type that best suits his needs and this is the vital characteristic of the shaft, which requires special attention and consideration.

Being a golfer, you need to keep certain points or better to say rules in mind regarding flex to consider. Lets us take an example of stiff and flexible shafts. The stiffer shaft allows the ball to fly straight and flexible shaft make it fly to longer distance. Your physical skills also play a vital role here. If you are not the one who generates a high clubhead speed, you will not get the required distance with stiffer shaft. Similarly, if you are good at generating speed with clubhead, you may hit all over the place.

A professional or good golfer can easily judge from your swinging action that you have a stiffer shaft as you need to over-swing the shaft to get the desired distance. People often overestimate their strengths and is therefore get a wrong shaft for themselves. With appropriate shaft, and controlled swing you can achieve a maximum distance. So, always select the shaft that is best for you.

To consider your needs, it is better to have some sample shafts flexes before going to choose one for you. With these sample shaft flexes, you will realize the actual strengths and depth of your skills and you will be in better position to choose the right shaft flex for you. For instance, you may need to slice the ball with stiff shaft as it requires more clubhead speed. While with flexible shaft you may need to hook the ball.

An enormous range of flexes are offered by two major steel shaft manufacturer companies: True Temper and Apollo. The True Temper offers five models of steel shafts along with thirty varieties of flexes. On the other hand, Apollo s Master flex comes in regular, stiff, extra stiff, extra stiff and tour stiff flexes. Apollo has more than eleven models of shafts along with women shafts and some other varieties for senior golfers.

Normally, same flex can be used and easily got fixed to every club in your bag, but occasionally, you may find it help to have flexes for your sand wedge and pitching wedge. Inclusion of these flexes will definitely give you an edge on the shots that require more accuracy. Unlike amateur or low handicap golfers, experienced golfers know the exact use of flexes at proper situations.
