With its humble beginnings in USA in the 19th century, golf has definitely come a long way. Considered as one of the most popular sports in USA, it is also famous as a traditional and gentleman s game. This conservative image has also been extended to golf apparels. Interestingly, along with the game, golf attires have also undergone various changes. It is believed that when it was first introduced in USA, players while teeing off at private courses wore dresses made out of animal skin, largely due to the Scottish origins of the game. By the turn of the 20th century, players started adopting style of their favorite golfers and visited private golf courses wearing tailcoat, knee-high britches worn over long stockings. Within the next 25 years, leggings were no longer preferred and instead full-length slacks found their way in the wardrobe of the golfers. By 1950s, formal jackets became less popular and ties were replaced with bow ties. In the 21st century, golf apparels are considered an interesting mix of traditional and modern outlook. Many private courses still maintain a conservative attitude towards the attire and are strict about it. • Avoid dressing too casually while playing at private golf courses. Remember that many private golf clubs are completely against members wearing jeans, tank tops, halter dresses, short shorts etc. The safest bet for a person, while playing at private golf courses, would be to opt for traditional pants and collared shirts. • As far as shirts are concerned, almost all private golf course and etiquette rulebooks advise wearing collared ones. In earlier times, collared shirts indicated only buttoned up dress shirt. However, these days collared shirt also includes polo shirts. Modern polo shirts are made from athletic material and come with sweat wicking technology and air vents. Some also have in-built sun protection, which can block 98 percent of harmful sunrays. No matter what material the shirt is made of, it is crucial to opt for a collared shirt while visiting private golf courses. • Khaki pants are a good choice. Long shorts are usually allowed, but one should still inquire about it from the club authority. Avoid wearing white, plaid or checkered pants at private golf clubs. Women golfers can opt for skirts, but it is advised to wear a solid colored skirt. • It is recommended to wear spiked shoes. Hard, metal spikes are no longer in use. Few private golf courses may allow athletic shoes or sneakers but only if soft spikes are not available. • There are many who believe that hats provide a final touch to the golfer s ensemble. However, hats are optional and one may or may not wear it. Golf is a conservative game and golf apparels are expected to be formal, clean and no fuss. It is important, at the same time, to opt for clothes that are comfortable since players need to spend a considerable amount of time at private golf courses.
