Alaska Fishing Lodges And Their Features

Fishing trips are sometimes a once in a lifetime experience, so finding the perfect lodge will make it all that much more special. There are many aspects to take into consideration before booking a trip. Alaska fishing lodges can include a variety of accommodations, as well as different packages suited to fit most people's needs. Other considerations include the type of fishing offered, lodging choices, meals provided, airport transportation, and the overall atmosphere of the lodge.

Accommodations- A particular type of lodging can be the key decision maker of the entire trip. Some people choose to have a little cabin, all to themselves, with seclusion being the main element. Other travelers enjoy meeting new people and look forward to the lodge setting. Fishing lodges sometimes offer both types of housing. Multi-level lodges have the atmosphere of a hotel, while cabins are a home away from home. Cabins generally come with their own kitchen included. Lodge dining is usually more of a restaurant setting. Fishing lodges located near the water might also have houseboats for rent.

To and From the Airport- Providing transportation to and from the airport is almost always an option fishing lodges have. There are many lodges that are so remote, it would be extremely difficult to get to if no transportation was provided. If there isn't a shuttle bus that runs a regular route between the lodge and the airport, then scheduled trips are the other option. When traveling, it's a good idea to find out if transportation needs to be scheduled in advance.

Extras- The variety of amenities is something to take into consideration, especially if there is a diverse group going. Just because it is a fishing lodge, doesn't mean they only offer fishing. Some lodges also include kayaking, rafting, hunting, or even bear viewing. Fishing lodges may offer all or only one of these added amenities. If fishing is the only thing offered, they might also offer assisting in getting the proper licenses and stamps. They might also help in cleaning, packaging, freezing, and boxing fish for the ride home.

Fishing- Types of fishing available at most lodges are spin cast fishing and fly fishing. The rivers are where fly fishing is most likely to take place, while spin cast fishing is more often used in the deeper waters. The Alaskan rivers are filled with halibut, yelloweye rockfish, rainbow trout, silver salmon, chum salmon, sockeye salmon, king salmon, and lingcod. Chartered tours going to deeper waters for fishing are generally catching king or Alaska salmon.

Guides and/or transportation are available for trips by sea or air. Fishing lodges offering deep water fishing will usually provide all the equipment necessary for the trip. Many lodges offering fly fishing will have the choice of renting equipment or people may bring their own.

Eating- Having meals provided take the chore out of finding a place to eat for each meal. Many lodges have their own restaurant or offer buffet-style dining. The price of meals may also be included in accommodation pricing.

Whether it's a cabin on an island or a lodge with multiple levels, Alaska fishing lodges can be found with just about any type of package desired.
