Great Places to Ride Your Bike in Montana
Montana is a state filled to the brim with natural beauty. Mountains, forests, and lakes are everywhere and they will make your ride more splendid and challenging. Take into account though that the state has severe winters, and riding is recommended in summer and early fall months. Even spring can be harsh with much melting snow making the trails muddy and slippery. Be safe!
The Pear Lake Trail by Dillon is actually an old jeep road that is nearly 12 miles long. This is a good place for beginners because it is not complicated, but has some climb to challenge your stamina. There are some lovely views of lakes and mountains as you go.
The Castle Mountains bike trails by Sulfur Springs have several riding trails for all riders. There are flat dirt roads that are good for beginners or more challenging trails that reach an elevation of 4000 feet for the advanced rider. With hard climbs and speeding descents, there is something here for everyone to try. If you really want to spend some time here, you can visit the hot springs resort that has a pool and soaking tub in White Sulfur. You can soak and relax your aching joints after a long day of riding.
The Rattlesnake Recreation Area near Missoula is very popular with both bikers and equestrians. As part of the Lolo National Forest it is well maintained and there are detailed maps of the area so you cannot get lost. There are various types of trails for all levels of experience. If you're looking for steep climbs, ridge rides, and lots of other technical stuff, then this is the place for you! Beginners and intermediate riders can also enjoy some of the trails here as well. Just be on the lookout for hikers and horseback riders as well.
Experienced riders LOVE the 9-mile trail that connects Emerald Lake and Heather Lake near Bozeman. Not only is the scenery stunning, but you will experience lots of switchbacks, roots, and rocks. It's an uphill climb all the way to the lakes, but then you get to enjoy a screaming descent on the way back down!
Another trail with a lot of scenery is the one at Lost Cabin Lake close to Mammoth. The trails are only 4 and half miles and are very well kept, but there are some technical aspects for you to experience too. It is located in the middle of nowhere and so there will not be any crowding and you will see some amazing scenery, so do not forget to bring your camera!
While we're on the subject of beautiful scenic trails, you won't want to miss out on the Kootenai Falls trail near Libby. It's best to start at the falls so you get the hard part out of the way first. You'll have to cross a swinging bridge and then push your bike over about a mile and a half of shale, but the reward is a breathtaking view of the falls. Then you have about 10 miles of track to finish up.
The majority of trails in Montana are shared with horseback riders too so be on watch for others on the trails. Never litter on the trails so that Montana can keep pleasing others with its exceptional beauty for many years to come.
