Summer is the most popular season for couples in the US to get married. Each year, about a third of all nuptials are scheduled during the summer months. Why is it such a popular time for lovers to tie the proverbial knot? One reason is that the warm weather gives people a myriad of options when it comes to style, dress and even the setting.

Of course, it all starts with the bride and her dress. Fortunately, most wedding dresses are sleeveless or strapless, which makes them better-suited for a warm weather ceremony. But if you reside in a region of the country where the mercury tends to soar in the summertime, it may be a good idea to look for a lighter dress. Light fabrics like linen, crepe, chiffon and organdy are popular with brides who are planning an outdoor ceremony under the hot summer sun.

A beach wedding, for example, is often a bit less formal than other outdoor ceremonies like a garden or lawn wedding. Many beach brides choose to wear an elegant slip dress instead of a full gown, and some may even go barefoot. The groom may choose a traditional tuxedo or a much lighter linen suit.

As mentioned, the garden or lawn wedding is typically a more formal affair. But because they are outdoors, accessories abound, even for the bridal party. Probably the most popular accessory for the bridesmaids is the big straw hat. The men can dress down a bit, but not too much. Instead of a classic tuxedo, it is perfectly acceptable to wear a sharp black or navy blazer with khaki slacks.

For Guests
In spite of their popularity, it isn t always easy to know what to wear to a summer ceremony. If the wedding is to be held indoors, guests are expected to dress in formal attire. But when the wedding is an outdoor affair, it can be confusing. As a general rule of thumb, guests should consider the setting first.

A little black dress is perfect for a garden or lawn ceremony. If you feel that the single tone is a bit bland for your tastes, incorporate a few accessories. A nice straw sunhat, a silver sequined purse and understated jewelry can complete the look. And for the men? A nice light-colored suit made of natural fibers that can breathe is a good choice for the guys. Tan and grey are perennial favorites when it comes to outdoor summer suits. Just don t wear white. Yes, that rule applies even to the guys.

For a beach wedding, there are a few fairly obvious guidelines. You cannot wear high heels in the sand. You d sink. But sandals are far too informal. That is why most female guests select a simple pair of ballerina flats. When it comes to the dress, floral prints are perfect for a ceremony in the sand. Maxi dresses are also quite popular for beachside weddings. The guys can put on that same light-colored suit they would wear in the garden or on the lawn.

For Everyone
A beach wedding is probably the most informal of the outdoor ceremonies. For this reason, they are perfect for small groups of friends and family. The wedding in the sand is far more intimate and romantic that most others. Perhaps that is why most couples plan them when the sun goes down. Imagine watching the sunset as you kiss your new husband or bride.

However, there are a few drawbacks. Beach weddings can be expensive for guests to attend because they almost also require additional travel. They are also more expensive for photographers and caterers, as they may require permits and special licenses.

A garden wedding, on the other hand, is often a bit less expensive for the couple and the guests. After all, they are typically held at a family home or a private residence. But because they are formal affairs, they often involve more preparation, especially if you do not have access to a beautiful garden.
