Try to Be Nice to Yourself During and After Divorce

Divorces often have several meanings, some positive and some negative. However you see it - and even if both parties were eager for the end - it is not something to brush off. Indulge yourself while going through this phase.

You will be sad after the divorce. It is the death of the relationship you expected when you married your ex-spouse. This is the end of the dreams of the life you were planning on living together. It might even be the end of your perfect parenting situation: two committed parents living together and taking care of their children.

Many of us are simply not prepared emotionally after a divorce; we can get overwhelmed by feelings of betrayal and bitterness. Each feeling is normal and even feeling nothing but shock can be normal too. Each life runs its course differently. The key is to allow the feelings to happen, not bottle them up to deal with later.

You may find it helps to talk to other people. Your friends my try to comfort you but may not know how to deal with your emotional state. It's time to get the help of a professional. Check with your local social service agency to find a self-help group or a counselor who can discuss your feelings and issues and not care if you get angry or weepy. There may even be a free or low-cost counselor or group that works for you.

Additionally, take care of your financial circumstance, especially if you didn't take part in handling bills and other monetary decisions. Your local community college may even offer classes for people dealing with similar issues. Again, a social service agency will point you in the right direction.

If you haven't held a job before, don't worry. This is a great time to train for a job and you may qualify for grants and loans that you didn't qualify for when you were married. Do what you have to do if you need another job.

The ending of a relationship may also adversely impact your self-esteem. Depending on how you were treated at the end of your marriage, you may feel a little low about yourself. This is a great time to take a class you've never had time to take, pick up a new hobby, and make some more time for friends who have missed you. The more you get out there, the more you will start feeling yourself again and become the vibrant, healthy person you were before.
