How does anyone know when a romantic relationship is over? When things seem a little dull is this a short term glitch or the beginning of a downward spiral? For a lot of people, its not that the situation is bad, its just not very fulfilling. Or maybe the relationship seems like more of a hassle than it used to be.
One thing to keep in mind is that all relationships go though stages. Its not realistic to expect the same degree of excitement you had when you first met to persist unchanged. In successful relationships, a deep love supplants the initial infatuation. However, things dont always go well. Sometimes relationships should end. How does anyone decide?
Consider these tips to help you decide whether or not you want to end your long term relationship. One definite reason to end a relationship is if your partner is physically abusive. That is as close to a definite rule as youll find.
Here are some things to think about.
Do you and your partner truly like and respect each other? Do you share similar values? If you don't, its a serious caution flag.
Do you both acknowledge that you each have needs the other should be willing to help you fill? Are you both willing to do that?
Does your partner have some absolutely unacceptable traits or personality flaws? Most people don't change at core, so that may be a reason to end the relationship.
Are you both willing to put some effort into the relationship? To be successful long-term, both partners need to be committed to the relationship.
Do you like to plan a future together? Do you even think its possible? If not, your relationships foundation may be shaky.
As you go over the above factors to see how they're reflected in your relationship, I think you'll get a clearer idea of what the best course of action is. Most often, a relationship is in a normal lull and doesnt need to end. It just needs a little attention However, most people have no idea how to improve a relationship thats struggling.
My personal opinion is that the divorce rate would be a lot less if couples sought out good relationship advice when a problem comes up (or even better, if they develop the skills ahead of time to prevent problems).
