Professional Cordless Drill Tools

Article Written By: Peter Wu

Add Your Picture Woodworkers and other professional handymen have long known that better tools give you better work results. And modern cordless drills certainly qualify to be among the better tools.

It is powered by rechargeable battery and does the work of drilling holes and driving fasteners. Without needing a power cord, this tool has become so popular that many similar but specialized tools have appeared in the market and find their ways into the hands of tradesmen. Here are some common ones.

1. Impact Driver

The impact driver is like a hammer drill on steroid. Whereas the hammer drill is used to drill holes, the impact driver is used to drive screws, long screws especially.

A hammer or a regular drill doesn't have enough torque to overpower the high resistance as it drive a long screw deeper into the wood. You need to push hard on the tool to get it in. But an impact driver has. Its torque power belies the look of its small body.

In jobs like making a cabinet or building a deck, the bulk of the task is basically sinking long screws in the right places. For this type of work the best tool is the impact driver. It will sink screws quickly and directly, without the hassle of pre-drilling pilot holes. When you work with dozens or hundreds of long screws, the time saved from no pre-drill will be significant. That's why contractors and cabinet makers really love this tool. Sometimes people call it an impact drill. However this is not accurate because it's a driving tool, not a drilling tool.

2. Hammer Drill

A hammer drill is just about the same as a cordless drill. It can do two jobs: drilling holes and driving fasteners. But it has one additional feature that the other tool lacks: switchable hammering action. This hammering or impacting action is highly useful when drilling in masonry.

Because masonry work involves material much harder than wood: rock, cement, brick, etc., the drill bit has a harder time penetrating during the hole-boring operation. What the hammer drill does is to provide a chipping or hammering action during drilling. This makes the bit bore into masonry much faster. For this extra feature, the hammer drill is priced slightly higher than then cordless drill. But this is well worth it, especially when your work has something to do with foundation or masonry.

3. Cordless Drill

Capable of both drilling and driving, the cordless drill is a motorized turning tool. The turning action enables it to drill with a drill bit, and to drive with a socket bit or screw bit. Its complete name is cordless drill driver since that's what it can really do. Its working capability is rated by the power output, in voltage and torque. That can go from a sub-compact 4-volt model to a beefy 24-volt model. And your project or work requirement will determine which one is the best for you. Obviously the low-voltage one is for doing easy chores like assembling small item stuff. And the highest-voltage one is for large projects such as house construction or remodeling. The middle range, around 14V to 18V, is more general-purpose and can handle equally well small or large jobs.
