There are sunglasses available for very small amounts of money, and for occasional use they're fine but they are unlikely to have good, protective lenses. If you want to stop UV rays damaging the retina then you need good lenses that are designed to protect against UVA and UVB rays. When looking to buy protective glasses, look out for a sticky label on the front of them. If the glasses don't have a label on the front, claiming 100% protection against UVA and UVB rays then you might want to reconsider your purchase.

You should also make sure that the sunglasses fit you properly, there is nothing more annoying than a pair that keep sliding down your nose or won't stay on properly. They should be not too tight, nor too loose. Ideally you should try on a few different pairs until you find one that fits properly. If they don't fit well then they won't provide the adequate protection that you need either, as the sun's rays will be able to penetrate.

When buying sunglasses you should also consider accessories to go with your purchase. They are an investment and you want them to stay looking good and working well for years to come. Make sure they come with a hard shell case to keep them in when you are not wearing them. This will help keep them from breaking or getting scratched. You should buy a chain or cord to keep them around your neck. Although many choose to place them on their head when they are not wearing them, this can bend them out of shape and loosen them over time. It is much better to wear them loose around your neck to prevent this from happening.
