Comparison Between Buying Glasses Online And Buying From High Street Opticians

Article Written By: Kathryn Dawson

Add Your Picture It is estimated that at least 50 percent of the population has a certain degree of refractive error. Refractive errors are common optical defects, divided into three main types which are short sightedness, long sightedness, and astigmatism. These are detected by an optometrist or an ophthalmologist during eye examinations. All of these errors of refraction can be corrected with prescription glasses, contact lenses, or refractive eye surgery.

Obviously, the most basic and easy way to have clearer vision is by using eyeglasses. But gone are the days when glasses merely functioned as gadgets to see well. Today, fashion dictates that eyewear should not only be functional but stylish as well. This has also led to the popularity of designer sunglasses and prescription sunglasses.

When buying prescription eyewear, the first step to getting glasses is of course, the prescription. Go for an eye examination where the doctor will test visual acuity and write a prescription detailing the precise amount of power needed to correct vision problems. A lot of countries require opticians to give each patient a copy of their prescription immediately following the examination, whether the patient asks for it or not.

It is important to keep the eye prescriptions because these are valid for two years. Keeping eye test results current can reduce delays in getting an eyewear and would make it possible to purchase from eyewear stores or online.

The advantage in buying from high street opticians is that the eye doctor can help in the selection process. Getting their opinions and feedback would make the process easier when choosing a particular frame or lens. Buying from the optical shop immediately after the eye test would ensure that the prescription values are correct and up to date. Also, there is an advantage of getting to actually wear the eyeglasses frames to have a more concrete idea of how one will look on them.

Choosing the right size frame for the face would also be easier. Buying glasses from the store would also mean getting the eyeglasses the same day or sometimes in less than an hour.

Frequently, the main drawback in buying from the high street is the cost. Because of the towering rates in most retail districts, opticians have to pass these on to the customers. There are also middlemen to consider, which can make the prices even higher. In addition, there is also the cost of store upkeep, staff salaries, and overheads.

On the other hand, buying online is definitely cheaper because opticians can do away with unnecessary costs and overheads, thus passing on these savings to the customer. This is the best benefit from buying glasses online. Also, this means that one can shop in the comforts of home, at any time of the day and not having to go out and transfer from store to store in search for the quality inexpensive frame. In terms of fashion and the latest trends, spotting the hottest and most recent style is easy online. Unlike stores that have to physically do an inventory and update the displays on stands, online retailers simply click, delete, and upload different designs as they become available.

Of course, there are also disadvantages to online shopping. If the current prescription is unavailable, one still has to go to an eye doctor for a test update. For people who are in a hurry to get a pair of glasses, then it could be a problem because it would take around two to three weeks before an order arrives. Trying on the frame is also not possible, although there are some online stores where one can upload a photo and virtually try on the various styles. Aside from regular glasses, there are also several designer brands available, the more popular ones are D and G and armani glasses, police sunglasses, and Ted Baker glasses and sunglasses.

In summary, buying from high street opticians is best for those who want a traditional way of trying on glasses, getting help from the optician, and having the glasses available immediately. If one is looking to save money and get quality goods at the same time, then buying glasses online is the way to go.
