It is England's first Duke of Wellington who's given the credit for the incredible popularity of the Wellington boot or the Wellie” as it's also known. However, it's a pretty safe bet that he didn't invent them, because for one thing he wasn't a shoe maker. What he was, though, was a sensible man who recognised this one particular boot for what it was and still is.

That is sensible and affordable footwear that does a pretty darn good job of keeping the wearers feet dry. The Wellington boot is also durable, comfortable and functions well as a work boot, so it fits the bill in a lot of key areas during the Dukes time in England. A place that's known for wet weather and back then there weren t a whole lot of paved roads.

Somewhere over the course of his life the Duke of Wellington picked up and put on a pair of waterproof rubber boots and was impressed with them to the point that what he did after that led to the boot being named after him. He introduced them to the general public and it's safe to assume that this wasn't done by accident. He recognised the need and took it upon himself to publicise information about them and through governmental channels encouraged their production.

They didn't have radio or TVs back then and Wellington boots certainly weren't something that would naturally catch the public's imagination because after all they were just a rubber work boot. So whatever he did worked well. Much better than he could have ever anticipated because now as a direct result of the Duke of Wellington's efforts back in the early 1800s the boots have become popular worldwide and now carry his name.

There's something else that there's no possible way on earth he could have ever foretold and that is the current popularity of the Wellington boot as fashion-wear. It was the green and black functionality of the rubber boot that first caught the attention of the Duke of Wellington s prudent sensibilities and has evolved into a genuine fashion statement.

The Wellington boot is trendy now for even more reasons because it is available in a wide range of fashionable colours and designs styles. So it is no longer the ugly duckling of footwear, it is, however, still affordable and effective for keeping your feet dry. So it's great for wintertime, particularly in rural areas.

Another nice feature of the Wellington boot as winter footwear is that it's just so easy to slip in and out of when stepping in and out of cars and buildings if it's rainy and muddy outside. It's also a safe fashion investment considering that it's been in style since the early 1800s, so in this respect it makes it incredibly unique. A boot that you only have to buy once and will last a long time, but that you never have to worry about going out of style.
