IP Camera Specs

Article Written By: emilyrobinson01

Add Your Picture An IP camera is a type of digital CCTV camera that requires no wires and which can transmit the information wirelessly. This means that it can also be viewed remotely, and because the information is digital it means it can be edited, sent and analyzed for such purposes as live streaming, e-mail and motion sensors.

However an IP camera will vary in a number of different ways and choosing the precise specifications for the best performance is important. First of all you will need IP cameras that are from a good make. Once you've chosen a make then you need to look into the other things. This will include the resolution.

There are two different types of resolution. The first is spacial resolution and this refers to the number of pixels that you can fit on the screen. This is what we normally think of and the same as the intended meaning when you're talking about televisions. With a television the set with the high resolution will be the one that can fit more pixels on the screen and thus show more information in more detail. This will be indicated by the 'megapixels. The higher this number the more pixels there are on the screen and the more detail you'll be able to make out. This is important for such things as seeing the perpetrator's face in enough detail that the police can identify them.

The other type of resolution is 'temporal resolution'. Temporal means time, and so this means how many frames of footage you can fit in over a set time frame. In other words a high temporal resolution will mean that the image runs smoothly and looks real, whereas a low temporal resolution will look jerky or flickery. This is also what's known as the framerate and it is measured in 'FPS' which means 'Frames Per Second'.

In other words the higher the FPS, the more separate frames of animation you'll see in a second and the smoother the footage will be. This is again important to ensure that you catch everything that transpires. A very slow frame rate might be enough to miss certain actions and to miss the criminal shoplifting or vandalizing. You may then find that you have insufficient evidence with which to prosecute.

Of course this affects the size of the file and the higher the framerate and definition the larger the files will be and the fewer you can fit on various kinds of storage. Thankfully that's not a problem as most IP CCTV will allow you to set lower framerates and resolution should you want to. Likewise though you may want to choose the camera with the best file format that allows for the smallest file size while saving all the information.
