Exhibiting even at small local trade fairs is expensive and so you certainly need to make sure that you get value for money out of attendance. One way to get value is to meet people and talk at length with them to the point where they either buy or are close to buying when they leave, how many people can you do this with though? Some trade fairs go on for days but also tend to have different visitors each day, still longer trade fairs may actually be aimed at buyers buying products such as those to sell in their stores. Not everyone you meet will need something right away and many may not even be interested in talking to you, down the line though they might be interested and so getting across who you are is what is key to get value out of these kind of trade fairs. You can give out items or have items on a table for people to help themselves to even while talking to those people who are interested straight away. You could just give a business card or brochure to people who are interested for them to read later: along with the other cards and brochures they will get though yours won't stand out and may end up in the bin, others won't bother coming to get a brochure and will tell themselves they will remember your businesses name, only to forget it by the time they leave. Give out something a little different and of some value though and you will have people making a lot more effort to come by and grab something than they would if you gave them a card alone. A promotional item can serve like a business card even with at least basic contact details on, plus ideally a reminder of what you do, if they are asking you for something as well they shouldn't mind at all if you ask them for a business card and ask if you can add them to your mailing list. Once someone has a promotional item it needs to be something they will actually value enough to keep and will use. A soft toy is a lovely idea but no use if it gets given to a child and rarely gets seen by the person you want as a customer. For most people you want something they will see and use at work, something they will see everyday and then when they do need what you offer they will have your details there in front of them. A coaster is quite good but not original, a calendar is a little more expensive but also something people will use, make sure though it really is a good calendar that people want to look at, not a series of pictures of your company's staff at work in your offices.
