The way things are going, in the not too distant future, there will be no such thing as mobile phones, PDAs, or MP3 players, as these will probably all come together in one versatile package. Already there are units on the market, for example Appleandrsquo;s iPhone, that boast features from all of these appliances, and it will not be long before most mainstream mobile phones are able to do the same things.

In two thousand and five, Motorola introduced the Rokr, a mobile phone/media player that is compatible with Apple's iTunes, and all the other major manufacturers have followed suit by providing new-media capable 3G mobile telephones, with varying degrees of success. Already, network providers already offer attractive multimedia add-ons such as track downloads, multimedia messaging bundles, and mobile TV subscriptions.
However, the majority of these have used flash memory cards for storage, which up until recently, have had limited storage capacity as opposed to the hard disks used by upscale media players.

However, recent advances in flash memory technology have resulted in SD cards with capacities up to 16GB on a single card, and this figure is only set to increase in the coming years, with exciting consequences for the average mobile phone user. It is projected that in a decadeandrsquo;s time, you might be able to store over 1 Terabytes(thatandrsquo;s a thousand Gigabytes, or 1,000,000 Megabytes) on a miniscule, cheaply available mini-SD card. This is enough space to store over two hundred feature length DVD-quality films on a little piece of plastic the size of your thumbnail. The mind boggles!

On most modern mobile telephones, you get a miniature colour LCD screen. You are able to photographs, have them as wallpapers, and message them to your contacts, but this is only the tip of the iceberg. A firm known as MobiTV pioneered the concept of real-time TV for mobile phones, and these days, mobile TV services are available from most major mobile network operators. Soon, all the major worldwide TV networks and even exclusive satellite channels will be available on your phone. The swift connections of 3G technology make this perfectly possible, and surely wonandrsquo;t be too long before broadcasters are bashing each other out of the way in order to take advantage of this burgeoning new market. Boffins have predicted that, by 2015, over two hundred million people will be using their mobile telephones to watch television, by which point scientists have anticipated that mobile telephones will have average connection rates of several megabytes per second, easily quicker than most home internet services in this day and age. In addition, it will be cheaper and less tricky by that point to make large, low-power displays, which will no doubt find their way onto mobile telephones phones as the mobile TV market becomes bigger.
