A rapid shift to the mobile application management from the usual device management is obvious. This is to make them compatible with the operating system that already exists in the mobile device.

There are many organizations that are already habituated to control the software that works on the PC of the user through tools like the SMS of Microsoft and Tivoli of IBM. The Androids, iPads, and iPhones are taking the market by a storm.

The mobile phone devices do not stick to a standard format. The management tools for most of the desktop applications cannot handle the applications based on Mac OS X.

The mobile operating system undergo more dramatic changes that the desktop operating systems. This makes the mobile application management very difficult especially when you have opted for the traditional approach of information technology.

Nowadays, the main concern has shifted from universal compatible application to successful management of applications that are business oriented. This implies that the application with the related data can be deleted from the device when the employee resigns from the company, or the device lost. There rises a need to manage the licenses and the updates. At times there is also need of monitoring the use of the applications.

A policy oriented approach has evolved. The data such as contacts and mail can be managed through tools like Microsoft Exchange, BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES). This can also be done through third party MDM tools like MobileIron, Good Technology and Trellia. Some of these tools can also be used for controlling the accesses to the data.

The mobile application management (MAM) of Antenna Software creates a virtual box on the Android device or iPhone. The approach of Antenna Software is such that the HTML applications are put in this box. This approach is very similar to the VDI approach that is used in the application of Citrix Systems' Receiver.

The best feature of the box approach is that it offers distinct separation among the work applications, personal applications and the data. One of the negative aspects of major concern is that it is somewhat rigid because when the users want to access the business oriented HTML applications they are forced to open a container application.
