Does technology have an end? I mean, can we really get to a point where we can drop the curtains on an innovation? Take a look at the telephone for example; this was the ultimate tech in human evolution. To be able to talk to another person miles and miles away in real time was just glorious. A full century later, in the 80s, mobile phones or cell phones took over from the plain old telephone services, and people must have thought, this is it, what else can we ask for apart from the ability and freedom to call from anywhere. Making and being able to receive a call while on the move looked like the peak of this technology. But that cow still had milk in it and cell phones soon began to evolve. All sorts of features and utilities started finding their way into these gadgets which on the contrast, instead of increasing in size or weight, (well, with all that was being added in them) surprisingly shrunk more and more. Todayand#146;s phones are just tiny fractions of their ancestors in size, but tons heavier in features, functions and uses. Cell phones now find themselves being quickly overtaken by Smart phones. The curtains of the telephone technology are still up. Smart phones, first designed in 1992, are still cell phones, but offering more advanced computing ability and connectivity. You can think of them as handheld mini computers being integrated within the good old cell phones. They had been increasing the features and ability to run more and more applications based on platforms such as Java ME, but now Smartphone technology allows one to install and run more features and advanced applications based on specific platforms. They run full operating systems which provide a platform for application developers to invent even more uses for the phone well after it has been purchased by the user. There seems to be no end to what today's telephone can do. I doubt the first users of cell phones in Japan back in 1979 ever had the slightest notion that that device would one day be capable of taking pictures, recording video or just simply play music. They were fully contented with making calls on the go. That is just how it will always be with technology. Demand for advanced mobile devices is now pushing for more powerful processors, larger screens, memory and open operating systems. Cell phones, even though still in use and continually adding more features, are slowly giving way to Smart phones which have taken this need with vigor. Now Smart phones offer multitasking, touch and multi-touch screens plus accelerometers that greatly enhance how we interact with these gadgets. Yet with new and advanced operating systems supported by increased memory capacities, and thousands upon thousands of mobile applications being developed, the functions of Smart phones are limited only to one's imagination.
