Finding gorgeous lingerie is easy. Feeling sexy in it is the most natural thing in the world. But even for the most domestically gifted of us, washing lingerie doesn't always come easily! A lady and her lingerie should have a long-term relationship, though, and it's difficult to feel like a bedroom diva when your lace is pilling and your silk is scratchy! Today we check out 11 handy tips for laundering your lingerie so that it lasts. 1. Read the label!Every piece is different. To a male eye, they see nothing but the curves underneath, and even to the critical female eye look the same. However different fabric blends and manufacturing processes mean that the people that designed and made your lingerie know best how to care for it. So read the label before you pay attention to any of the tips below! 2. Keep it coolThe reason that most fabric care labels tells you not to tumble dry garments is that the combination of wet fabric and heat breaks chemical bonds and causes your lingerie to become misshapen. So don't tumble dry - but keep your wash water cool as well. 3. Can I machine wash?It must, in theory, be washed in a lingerie bag, at low temperatures, on the delicate cycle in the washing machine. However, you might find that fabrics become stretched faster, lace deteriorates and silk just isn't as silky when you consistently wash pieces in the washing machine. It should be a last resort only. 4. Don't soakSoaking lingerie can make fabric become misshapen, even at low temperatures. Addiionally, if it is coloured the colour may run or fade. 5. Always drip dryIt's a rare piece of lingerie (and no, Bonds cotton hipsters don't count!) that can be tumble dried. However, neither should you dry it in front of a heater, in a microwave or in direct sunlight. 6. Try not to wring your lingerieThis will ruin the shape also. Keeping your lingerie fairly flat, press it to remove excess water before hanging it up in the shade to dry. 7. Do up bra hooksYou should always do up the hooks on bras before washing - especially if you need to machine wash in an emergency. Otherwise they are like little knives floating around the lingerie bag! 8. Put that iron away You don't need to tell me twice! Most pieces of lingerie shouldn't be ironed ... see tip 2. Lay them flat to dry, and press them flat when removing excess water, and ironing shouldn't be necessary. It isn't as if they'll be on display at public speaking engagements or anything...9. Dry clean real silkOnly pre-washed silk can be washed at home. Otherwise it should be dry-cleaned. 10. Wash bras regularlyWhen it comes to everyday lingerie, you should wash bras after every wearing. Even if you are sitting at a desk, your bra is usually exposed to perspiration, deodorants and skin lotions, and the chemicals in these will degrade the fabric if left on too long. 11. Don't deter the gents! Harsh detergents will make soft fabrics scratchy. Fabric softeners will do the same, funnily enough - although they cause more long term damage, just like lotions and perfumes do.
