What to Look for in a Cot Bed for Baby

Buying a cot bed for your baby doesnandrsquo;t have to be confusing, especially when it comes to new parents. Just making sure you have a safely constructed bed is the most important thing to worry about when looking for a bed for your baby, whether itandrsquo;s new or used.

The slats on a cot bed need to be close enough together as not to allow a babyandrsquo;s head to go through. Many deaths have occurred from the older model beds that were mad with slats that were too far apart. The slats should be at least 45-65mm apart. If you are looking at a used bed for your baby you will also need to make sure that the slats are sturdy and still attached as they were when new. Make sure there arenandrsquo;t any spots that are splintering. If the bed has been painted, add in the cost and time to take off that paint because you canandrsquo;t be sure if there was lead in the paint that was used.

Aside from watching closely for safety issues concerning your babyandrsquo;s cot bed, looking for style and design will be another aspect of baby bed shopping that you will probably enjoy. You will have a large selection to choose from. Todayandrsquo;s cribs are a far cry from the designs of yesterday. You can get an oval crib that would be lovely centered in a bright nursery. You can also choose from a crib that fits into the corner or one that will turn into a toddler bed two or three more years down the road.

A cot bed is generally slightly larger than a normal sized cot, so you will want to make sure that you get the right size mattress. Also, these beds usually donandrsquo;t have drop down sides like other cribs, which would make getting a baby in and out a little more difficult. One great feature of some cots is that the rail can also serve as a teething rail. Most beds are equipped with swivel castors that can be locked so the bed wonandrsquo;t move around while baby is in it.

The greatest thing about bringing a new baby how is to see how they react to the bright colors, mobiles, and toys that you have put everywhere around the room. The worst part for new parents is when they realize a baby is a little too small to notice a whole lot except the crib! So when you are shopping for a cot, donandrsquo;t forget to add in a brightly colored bumper pad set and a mobile to hang above the cot. A mobile that winds up and plays soft lullabies are the best in helping to not only pacify the baby, but to put the baby to sleep as well! Youandrsquo;ll want to make sure that all the bedding you put in with your baby is fitted tightly on the mattress to prevent loose sheets or blankets that are too large from suffocating baby during sleep.
