The Sun and Your Vacation
One mistake that many people make when planning a trip is not taking the sun into consideration. I know that sentence might sound a little weird at first, but when you really think about it the sun is always there and must be taken into consideration even in the winter months. It's not just about men's or women's sunglasses either- though that's not a bad place to start. Let's talk about taking a trip to the mountains in the winter. What many people might not think about is that on a clear winter's day on a snowy mountain slope, the sun is even a bigger deal then it would be on a summer day. This is because the glare coming off of the snow is much more intense than anything you might encounter at home. Snow blindness doesn't just apply to white out conditions. You can do serious damage to your corneas by not wearing sunglasses when the sun is out in snowy conditions (and don't forget the sunblock either).
Another place to consider the sun is on a cruise ship. Most people view a cruise ship as a self contained destination where you will be inside most of the time. While that is true in most cases, that does not mean that you won't be encountering the sun while on deck or in port. Before you leave be sure to check the weather of your cruise ships "Port-of-calls" and plan accordingly. Also, if you're planning on tanning on deck, make sure you bring plenty of sunblock. Road trips are a great way to see the country and to soak in the local flavor of the people who populate it. Even though much of a road trip will take place inside of a vehicle, this does not mean that the sun doesn't play a key part in your trip. If the sun is out, even on a winter day, the driver should always remember to bring their sunglasses. Nothing will annoy a driver more on a long drive then the sun persistently getting in his or her eyes. This could lead to accidents, especially when roads are populated.
It also might be a good idea to invest in a sun screen to put across the front windshield while the car is parked. This way the sun won't damage the car's interior when it's parked on a hot day. As long as you use your head your trip will be a fun, safe, and memorable one. Remember: the sun is always there, and it should be respected and planned for no matter where you are going.
