A couple of years ago it seemed like you were a second class citizen if you were in the market for plus size dresses. It was like most places that sold clothing didn't want to even admit that people who wore over a size 10 even existed, even though they were a majority of the people who went to the store in the first place. The reason for this is simple: clothing designers were still under the idea that they should only make clothing for those who looked like a rail. You know, the kind of people who actually got up there on the runway to show off the clothing in the first place? It was like they would not "lower" themselves to making dresses for the plus size crowd, even if the idea of who was truly "plus size" was an outdated idea in the first place. So what has changed? It would be nice to say that it was a shift in the way that people thought about "true" beauty and such, but the truth is that it had more to do with two things: the Internet and the market. Essentially, the Internet came along and showed that there was a big market for plus sized clothing, and that it was worthwhile for these big designers to invest their money in making great looking designer clothing for people who didn't look like a rail. Not only did the Internet allow plus sized women to get the clothing that they needed, but also get the clothing that they wanted as well. No more settling for the meager pickings that you could find at your local clothing store, you could now find whatever you needed in the click of a button. Of course, stores saw this and decided that things needed to change. Now, clothing stores offer more of a selection of plus sized clothing, whether it's dresses, shirts, pants or lingerie. In addition, big name designers have also began to put out a bigger variety of plus sized clothing including formal dresses and cocktail dresses. Now, you can go to most clothing stores and see plus sized clothing not in a particular section, but also intermingling with the other "smaller" sized clothing. This doesn't just mean you can find what you need quickly and easily, but also that plus sized women can find what they need without being relegated to a certain section of the store.
