Young men have been saving up all year to make this prom a memorable event for him and his special prom date. Young ladies have been pouring over magazines for months searching for those special prom dresses. The dress can be quite possibly the most important thing for any young girl attending the prom. The entire student body is anxious to learn who the new Prom King and Queen will be (and everyone will secretly hope that they are the one chosen). What an exhilarating event for any high school student! However, not all of the student body will be participating in this exciting tradition of "high school prom". There are many special students that are the minority at their school and that are often overlooked. These would be the Special Education students or students with disabilities. Although the prom is open to all juniors and seniors; few, if any, Special Education students ever attend prom. All students are welcome to attend the prom, but sometimes getting to the location or feeling uncomfortable or perhaps fearful of something new can make the entire event a very traumatic experience. This situation came to the attention of several student council members at a high school in Central California. They noticed that there were no Special Education students in attendance at last year's prom, nor at the Winter Formal. They put their heads together and decided that this had to change immediately. Because many of the Special Education students had special needs and often required Personal Assistants and/or wheelchairs; the student council decided to have a Special Education Prom for special needs high school students. With the help of their school personnel, fellow students and members of the community; they were able to hold the very First Special Education Prom at their high school! Young men were dressed in tuxedos and bow ties; and the young ladies wore elaborate prom dresses and lots of bling! Students were on the dance floor being twirled around in their wheel chairs; others were line dancing with their friends, and even some of the teachers joined in. It was a wonderful experience for all that participated. This experience not only gives special education students an opportunity to improve on their social skills and communication; but it also gives them self-confidence and makes them feel part of something exclusive. Then again, most important thing that they will always have, are the wonderful memories that will live with them forever.
