Castors roll in the money for Children in Need

Article Written By: katrinawagner

Add Your Picture The Rickshaw Challenge is a massive fund raising event led by BBC s Matt Baker as he rides from Edinburgh to London on a rickshaw in aid of Children in Need. The specially adapted rickshaw with the additional castors will take Matt on a four hundred and eighty four mile journey across the country. On the journey Matt plans to pick up celebrities and interview them as he cycles the rickshaw heading for London.

The rickshaw offers him no protection, so he will have to brave all the elements on his journey. The standard three wheel tricycle design has been slightly modified by adding swivelling castors to the rear chassis for additional support, and covered in the Children in Need branding and logos. This will make Matt hard to miss as he Braves Mountains, traffic and of course the British weather!

Rickshaws with wheels and castors are fast becoming an everyday presence on our streets in London; however their official name is a pedicab. There is a distinction between rickshaws that are pulled by humans on foot, or on a cycle and powered rickshaws moved by motors. The pedicab used in the Children in Need Challenge is not a recent invention. Pedicabs or rickshaws originally propelled by humans were first seen in Japan back in 1868 and fast became a popular mode of transport. Originally constructed of bamboo, they were lightweight and easy to pull. Their original designer is however difficult to identify. Some say it was invented by American Missionaries in Japan, others claim Japanese heritage, and for some the design was originally developed in France.

The rickshaw soon went out of fashion in the Far East with the development of the motor car in the 1930 s and the growth of the welfare state and human working rights. However with overcrowded cities in the West and Far East, the rickshaws popularity has been revitalised. Indeed rickshaws powered by cycles, on castors and wheels were introduced to London in 1995.

Initially they were seen as novelty modes of transport, however in today s climate of zero carbon emissions, the rickshaw on wheels and castors is a popular choice. Pedicabs are not only zero emission, easy modes of transport around London and the Westend, but also can be hired for weddings and functions and used as effective modes of advertising. Rickshaws on wheels and castors therefore are not only great modes of transport in cities, but now, thanks to Matt Baker, will be seen all over the country raising money for Children in Need.
