Differences of a Pricy Power Inverter and the Cheap Power Inverter

Article Written By: ddecker0315

Add Your Picture Did you ever noticed the difference in price of some inverters when they are of the same power category? Choosing the right power inverter that converts DC to AC power may look like an easy task to do, and when you are going to the electronics shop and buy a power inverter for your use, you'll encounter a vast array of choices of inverters and differs in price. Ranging from less than $25 up to a wopping thousand dollar, you may find it difficult to know what features of the unit that will suit your needs.

Considering the wattage, and how will you be connecting the power inverter to your power source, another thing must be considered is the wave form output of the unit you'll be using. True-Sine wave and Modified-Sine wave are the two general types of power inverter. It is suggested to choose a power inverter that rated under 300 watts when using a 12v cigarette lighter socket found in vehicles. It is suggested because after drawing 300 watts on the inverter, fuses in some vehicle starts to blow. Several unit available on the market powered between 100-200 watts that plug directly into the cigarette lighter of a vehicle. It has only one outlet, but since plugging into a 12v socket is that required for the operation, it can't be beat for ease of use. These units supply around 150 watts of continuous power and normally have a built in surge protector.

Square wave units or low cost power inverter fall into three groups:

- For household appliances like Tvs(up to 19 inches), desktop computers, and other mobile office equipment. 500 watts is recommended and most of these connected via 12 volt plug.

- For household appliances like large screen TVs, bread machines and 5-amp power tools, 501-999 watts inverters are recommended. Most inverter are connected directly to the 12 volt battery and have three or more grounded outlets for powering several devices at the same time.

- For larger household appliances and large power tools, microwave oven, toaster and hair dryers power inverter ranging from 1000-4000 watts and generally provides 750-2500 watts of continuous power and these inverters are designed for direct connection to the battery network.

The problem with wave form only comes when specialized pieces of equipment need to be powered such as oxygen concentrators, fax machine, laser printers, high voltage cordless tool chargers, equipment variable with speed motors, electric shavers and garage door openers. These devices can have problems on an inverter that produced modified-sine wave signal.

To sum it up, its not really necessary to for an average user to go with the true sine-wave unit. The modified sine-wave found in most low cost power inverters is sufficient to cater the needs of the devices and their applications.
