Recording Extreme Sports

Article Written By: stevemckarmik

Add Your Picture Recording or taking pictures of any activity that involves a lot of movement and fast paced action is very difficult for multiple reasons. Firstly you've got the fact that you won't have many hands free – rock climbing and wind surfing don't tend to give you many free hands with which to do things. Then there's the fact that you'll be obviously moving a lot at high speeds, and this will mean that you get motion blur and other problems if you try to take the pictures yourself. Of course then there's the chance that you'll damage your camera if you're participating in such extreme activities – by dropping it, bashing it against a wall, or submerging it under water.

Understandably something like rally driving with its emphasis on high speed vehicles driving off road will involve a high chance of having a collision which could damage a camera. Meanwhile something like surfing holding a camera certainly isn't going to be a good environment for a camera unless the it is water proof as it will be likely to be submerged underwater (and again to be hit by the board or even lost if it gets washed away).

More than any of these things though, recording a sporting event can be a challenge as you can never prepare for what's going to happen. For example, if you're rock climbing and you suddenly pull off a great dyno, or if you're jet-skiing and you manage some impressive areal manoeuvre you won't have had any advanced warning that you're about to pull off the move and for that reason you won't be likely to have a camera set up in place in order to capture a photograph or video of what you just did.

To record a sporting event then you will need to be more crafty. One way to do it is to make sure that you have a camera that can account for motion blur, and these days most cameras should have this as an option (they're also useful for a range of other scenarios). Another obvious way to make sure you get lots of good shots is to have a third party hold your camera for you and take photos at good moments. However unless you pay someone to spend heir whole time watching you, these are only going to be rare occasions where they get photos, and any spontaneous moments of excitement will be missed.

With a Go Pro HD camera however you can get around most of these problems. A Go Pro HD camera will first of all be shock proof and mounted to a solid surface such as a helmet, vehicle or surfboard meaning that you don't have to hold it doing away with the problems of damage and finding spare hands. At the same time it will always have a good view on the action by giving your eye view of everything that happens.

The winning aspect, is the fact that you can set it to record permanently or to take timed photographs with only a small gap in between, giving you hundreds of reels of footage to sift through afterwards and catching almost all of the action.
